English guitar music

Hello dear readers!

I’m currently on a trip to my Mother Country – and very much enjoying a northern hemisphere summer – in England. And so in honour of this I’ve put together a wee collection of my favourite English guitar (OK, and some lute) music for you. Enjoy!

Well, we can’t go past the Elizabethan composer John Dowland (1563-1626) first up, can we?

And my favourite Dowland tune by my favourite guitarist (OK, and lutenist), Julian Bream:

How about Francis Cutting’s (1550 – ????) Packington’s Pound – a favourite of mine in the early days of learning guitar:

How about something a bit more contemporary? This is the fantastic Allegro from Sir William Walton’s  (1902 – 1983) Five Bagatelles:

Here’s a glorious piece and a composer recently introduced to me by Melbourne guitarist Daniel Nistico, William Lovelady’s (1945 –  ) This Morning In Omagh The Sun Rose Again

And an all-time favourite of mine – John Duarte’s (1919 – 2004) English Suite (played by Antigoni Goni):
